Regulatory compliance and quality assurance in inline inspection

Inline metal detection and checkweighing are central to food safety and quality assurance, but equipment alone does not ensure retailer or regulatory compliance.

For manufacturers working towards BRCGS certification, a HACCP-based food safety plan, or export requirements into markets such as the US, understanding where inspection equipment fits into the wider compliance picture helps avoid gaps that only surface at audit.

Foreign body detection within a food safety management system

Metal detection and checkweighing typically sit within a manufacturer’s wider foreign body and critical control point strategy, alongside measures such as sieves, filters, magnets and visual inspection depending on the product and process. Inline inspection is rarely the only control in place, and it needs to be considered as part of a documented hazard analysis rather than treated as a standalone safeguard.

This means the specification of a metal detector or checkweigher should be informed by the manufacturer’s own risk assessment, including the products being packed, whether meat, ready meals or other categories, known contamination risks and the critical limits already defined in the food safety plan, rather than by equipment sensitivity alone.

Validation and verification of inspection equipment

Standards such as BRCGS require that foreign body detection equipment is validated to confirm it can reliably detect contamination at the defined critical limit under worst-case production conditions, and then verified at set intervals, typically at start-up, changeover and end of run, to confirm it continues to perform as validated.

Validation and verification are distinct processes. Validation proves the system can do what it is intended to do, while verification is the routine check that confirms it is still doing so during production. Both need to be documented, using defined test pieces and clear pass or fail criteria, to support an audit trail.

Meeting BRCGS, HACCP-based and export requirements

BRCGS sets out specific clauses covering foreign body detection, equipment validation and corrective action procedures, and these are reviewed closely during certification audits. A HACCP-based food safety plan will typically define metal detection or checkweighing as a control measure at specific critical control points, with documented limits and monitoring procedures attached.

For manufacturers exporting to markets such as the US, additional requirements under frameworks like the FDA’s Food Safety Modernization Act may apply. Requirements vary by market, product and certification scheme, so manufacturers should confirm the specific standards relevant to their operation and customer base rather than assuming a single approach covers every requirement.

Record keeping, calibration and corrective actions

Alongside validation and verification, auditors expect to see equipment calibration records, maintenance logs and a documented corrective action procedure describing what happens when a check fails, whether that means isolating affected product, recalibrating the equipment or escalating to a wider investigation.

Keeping these records current and easily retrievable is often as important at audit as the inspection performance itself, since gaps in documentation are a common source of non-conformances even where the equipment is functioning correctly.

Where inline inspection fits within a wider quality assurance process

Metal detection and checkweighing support quality assurance, but they do not eliminate risk on their own. They work most effectively as part of a broader approach that includes supplier control, process hygiene, staff training and the wider hazard analysis, with inspection equipment providing a final, documented check rather than the sole line of defence.

Manufacturers reviewing or upgrading inspection equipment should treat the specification process as an opportunity to revisit how detection fits within their overall food safety plan, rather than a simple like-for-like equipment swap.
